Large, colourful and dramatic, I paint what I see around me every day, clouds, sea, sky, butterflies, birds and flowers, but with a twist!

I’m an artist living and working in East Devon. My passion is painting, specialising in creating large, contemporary works using oils and acrylics.

About my work

The key theme in my paintings is nature, with a subtle infusion of surrealism, colour and pattern.

I have many sources of inspiration from nature; sea and sky, clouds and birds, fish and butterflies, add to that immense landscapes that take your breath away. The Devon landscape is a constant source of inspiration: foggy bleak Dartmoor, Jurassic cliffs, and gentle rolling hills, they all feature in my work.

I am now using aluminium almost exclusively as a support for my work, it is a totally smooth surface that is so very different from canvas, creating works that look airbrushed but are painted with brushes. Aluminium is also completely stable and will not be affected by damp, cold, or heat. I have just started experimenting with perspex, results to be seen soon......

Mono printing is also a new departure for me, I am using the same sources of inspiration for these unique prints as I use in my paintings, but I feel that using a new medium takes the work onto a different level, its much more spontaneous than painting, as you never know quite what is going to happen.

The artists that inspire me are many and varied; Hieronymus Bosch, Pieter Bruegel, William Turner, Edouard Monet, Georgia O’Keeffe, Ansel Adams, Salvador Dali, Gustave Klimt, and David Hockney, to name just a few.
My goal with my work is to produce paintings/images that are thought provoking and arresting to the viewer.

About me

I’ve always had a passion for art – as a child I loved to paint and draw, so after school I went to Taunton Art College, I intended to study graphic design, but I had a change of heart, and studied textile design, much more colourful!

After my degree I designed wrapping paper, greetings cards and even wine labels, on a freelance basis. Then I became involved with an animation company who had relocated from London to the heart of the Devon countryside, we made several series of cartoons for television.

For the last 15 years I have dedicated my time to painting. I work for myself, and have based myself in studios around Devon and in West Sussex.

When I’m not painting in my studio at home in Devon, I like to take my dog Archie, for long walks by the sea.

My studio is open daily by appointment, please ring or email to let me know you’d like to come.

I do a lot of work to commission. Please contact me for details and price list.
